So I made a good decision recently, and I thought I’d share a story.

In the fifth grade I had a root canal and was given a ton of meds to deal with both pain and infection, and eventually after a few days of taking the meds, I noticed that a rash was starting to spread on my arms, and I wasn’t feeling so good. But I just brushed it off as some kind of flu. By the fifth day that rash covered me from head to toe, my temperature was 104.5 degrees, and I could barely stand. My mom, being a nurse, went through my medication and realized that there was only one thing in the meds that I had never been exposed to before, and that was the small doses of penicillin. So she took me off the meds immediately, and almost overnight my fever had broken and I was starting to feel better.

Fast forward to the ninth grade, I had a nasty case of strep throat. We knew what it was before we even went in, because my mom identified it. We were talking to the nurse, waiting for the doctor, and she asked if I had any allergies. I told her penicillin, and she entered it into my digital medical chart. The doctor comes in, and again, asks if I have any allergies, so again I tell him penicillin, and he’s surprised and adds it to my chart again because it didn’t save. Then we drive to the pharmacy and the person behind the counter slaps down a large bottle of penicillin for me to take home.

My allergy borders on complete intolerance, this doctor that accidentally prescribed penicillin to me, was convinced that I needed to be properly tested for the allergy in a controlled environment, but before I ever had cause to go to him, I had explained the symptoms to multiple doctors and they had all told me, flat out, if I were to ever be given any dosage of penicillin again, I would die. There are no two ways about it.

I’ve been meaning to get a wristband for years, but felt it was more necessary now that I’ve been going on trips by myself or just even driving around alone. Because if an entire chain of medical personnel can fuck up that badly, when I am sitting there telling them that I will die if they prescribe something to me, I sure as hell don’t trust them to get this right, in case I am unconscious.

So I found this website called Survival Straps that makes medical alert bands, as well as other stuff. And something really cool about them is what they’re made of, the rope weave is made of military issue paracord, so that if you find yourself in an emergency situation, you can unravel them and use the paracord. And if you do use the paracord, and you tell the company about it, they’ll replace your bracelet free of charge.

So basically, what I’m saying is, if you have a life threatening allergy or illness that doctors REALLY should know about, in a situation where you are unconscious, I would just like to signal boost this website. Because your life shouldn’t be at the mercy of human error.

I have a sulfa allergy, but considering it’s rather common and not often prescribed, I wonder if I should get one?

I’m allergic to sulfa, amoxicilin, penicilin, and shell fish [Iodine]. I really need to carry a card with me everywhere. .__.;

Halappanavar’s tragic story is quickly becoming an international controversy, prompting the Irish government to promise to reexamine its abortion policy.
